Visual Studio Community 2017 30 day trial RRS feed

  • Question

  • I installed VS Community 2017 on a server in a corporate environment.  It is for at most two developers to create and deploy SQL Server Integration Services packages for internal use.  As far as I know, this scenario does not require Professional version, which I would have to ask the developers to purchase in order to get a license key.  I didn't realize that Visual Studio Community 2017 is a 30 day trial unless you activate it or unlock it.  Now it will expire soon.  On Help|About screen, it let's you sign in with a Microsoft account to activate the product.  If I use my personal Microsoft account (Hotmail), will this VS installation now be tied to my personal account somewhere in the registry?  Once I activate VS, is it good for the life of the installation, or will it need to re-activated in the future (like annually?) Thanks.

  • Hi District9,

    Thank you for posting here.

All community versions of Visual Studio is permanently free, and so is Visual Studio Community 2017. You could use VS Community for 30 days trial if you do not sign in temporarily, and after 30 days trial you will need to sign in for permanently free to use.

    ## Your personal account ( sign in ) is used to enrich your Visual Studio experience, like synchronizing your Visual Studio settings, unlocking the Visual Studio Community edition and roaming settings across devices.

    ## Once you sign in with your account, this VS installation is now tied to your personal account but you still could sign out and change the accounts to sign in, that time the VS will be tied to the changed account.

    ## After you sign in to Visual Studio, you will not need to re-activated in the future and you could permanently use VS Community 2017 for free.

About why should I sign in to Visual Studio you could refer more from this document.

    Have a nice day.

    Best Regards,
