How to configure VPN for a public facing server (server 2008) and configure firewall security to stop files being shared on the public ip RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi I currently have a hosted server running server standard 2008. It has a public ip (supplied by the provider) and is completely public facing.

I have setup active directory and intend to use it as a file server, IIS server for 1 website and exchange server. I have several problems facing me with this.

Problem 1 – there server will gladly share files out to any authenticated user by simply using the public IP, for instance ‘\\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\c$’ how do I stop this and only allow VPN access

Problem 2 – I would like to setup a VPN so that my users can connect to the VPN and then access the sile shares and other resources. A quick Google and this appears very basic but I am not sure if I am setting it up right as I do not have things like a DHCP service and my server is public facing with no firewall in-between it and the web.
