Encryption between Data Gateway to an On-Premise Data Sources RRS feed

  • Question

  • Question : Is the Connection from Data Gateway to On Premise Data Sources Encrypted?

    When using the Data Factory Copy Wizard in the Azure Portal  and selecting the Source as an On-Premises SQL Source

    Which then is creating the linked service for On-Prem_DataGateway and there are no options to set this connection as Encrypt=True. Does this mean that the connect from the Data Gateway to the on premise data source uses an encrypted connection by default?

    Once the Linked Service is created the following connection string is specified  in Data Factory

    "connectionString": "Data Source=testdb2.london.ac.uk;Initial Catalog='CM_DEV';encryptedCredential=eyJDbGFzc1R5cGUiOiJ******c2lvbiI6IjEuMCJ9;",

    I can see that the credentials are being encrypted but I’m not clear if the actual connection itself is or isn’t. The above connection_string doesn’t mention the Encrypt Connection = True option unless it’s in the encrypted string.  Which would suggest that the connection is either not encrypted or is encrypted by default ?

  • Hi, to encrypt the connection for data in transition, you need to ensure “Encrypt=True” is specified as part of “connectionString” in the JSON definition for OnPremisesSqlServer linked service.
