When Word is loaded as an embedded (OLE) object, will it load any add-ins? RRS feed

  • Question

  • In particular, in Outlook 2003, a user can set Word as the editor for reading emails.  I'm wondering if I can write a Word add-in that will be loaded by Word when it's embedded/instantiated in this way.  I won't go into the full details of why, but I'm trying to find a way to get Word to load a C++ dll into its process in this circumstance.  I could always inject a dll into Word after the fact using one of various dll injection techniques, but I think it will be cleaner/nicer if I can get Word to load my dll into its process for me.  Thanks for any help!

  • Hi rubin

Yes, Word will load add-ins when it's started - at least when it's started as a stand-alone application. This can cause all kinds of problems, which is why I know :-)

I don't know how this works when it's used as an Outlook email editor, however. You might need to ask in an Outlook forum about that aspect.
