Phone developer tools - install in Windows 8 ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Can the Windows Phone SDK be used in Windows 8?

I have installed Visual Studio 2010 Pro, and the Mango SDK, but I had two pre-existing potential problems.

    1. My download of Windows 8 with tools wasn't complete and the Windows SDK did not get installed.

    2. I had Hyper-V feature installed, and during the phone tools install, my computer crashed, just around the time it was installing the emulator. I removed Hyper-V feature then re-installed the phone sdk.

I am downloading another copy of the Windows 8 with tools .iso and will redo a Windows 8 install, then try again with what I have learned to see if I can get things to work. But am I wasting my time trying to get the phone tools to work in Windows 8?

Do I still need to be running Windows 7 to do Phone development? The only thing missing at the moment is to get my code to either run on the emulator or onto my Windows Phone that I have developer unlocked. The tools don't seem to see either one of those 2 devices with my current setup.

I might attempt to install within a running copy of Windows 7 inside a Hyper-V, but without USB support to connect my phone to the virtual PC, that won't work. I got it to work with Windows Server 2008 R2 using Remote FX, but I don't see any Remote FX with Windows 8 client.

  • Unfortunately, at this time the Windows Phone tools can only be installed on a non-virtualized Windows 7/Server box. It can not be installed on top of Hyper-V or within Windows 8.

  • Why you are free to try this out, it's an unsupported platform, and things such as the emulator will not run.

Is this something that will be addressed anytime soon (like in the next few months) or is it an issue that wont be resolved until closer to the win8 release or a new release of the mango sdk?

    thanks

  • Apologies, this is something that I can't answer - we don't work on the Phone tools. You can try asking over on the Windows Phone forums: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsphone7series.

I have to disagree. I have been running the Windows Phone Developer tools on my 32-bit Windows 8 Developer Preview installation for quite some time now, and I have yet to discover any problems with it.
