SCCM build process and EFI

    Question

  • In the build blog post "Delivering fast boot times in Windows 8" you mention that Windows 8 will utilize UEFI as well as bios. In our testing with Mac hardware we found that EFI does not use a unique id as bios does that SCCM uses to tag a system in the database. SCCM ends up pulling a generic code based on system model and causes issues when attempting to additional systems because the database sees them as already existing. While there are work arounds for this in doing some items in PE earlier and have those attributes in SCCM they can be clunky. Has this potential inconvience been considered yet and has the System Center team been engaged for some best practices and/or updates to SCCM for the release of Windows 8?

  • Mac has some known issues with their EFI implementation and SMBIOS IDs.  As you stated, there are some workaround however System Center Configuration Manager does not support provisioning on Macs.  The System Cetner Configuration Manager Team is committed to working with the Microsoft Windows team to make Windows deployments easy.  At this time I do not have an information on future support and roadmaps.  Stay posted to the System Center site and team blog for annoucements of future release.
