5.1 surround and AAC RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is there any chance that Expression Encoder will be able to encode 5.1 (or better) sourround using the AAC-LC or HE-AAC formats in the near future? Many of our target devices (mostly TV and STB native players) don't support WMA Pro audio.

Answers

  • HE-AAC 5.1: Unfortunately, since this is not supported by the AAC Encoder we use, this is unlikely to happen.

AC-3/DDP: We don't have any short-term plans to support this, but feel free to vote for it here: http://expressionencoder.uservoice.com/forums/58981-general

Audio Normalization: we already have "Volume Leveling" in tour pre-processing tab, which achieves most of what normalization would accomplish. If pure normalization is important for you, please feel free to create an entry for it in the uservoice voting area above.

  • We are looking into including it for the next SP release of EE for AAC-LC. I don't think AAC-HE supports more than stereo though.

  • Thanks for the reply. Would "the next minor release" ship as sp2?

And while I can see why you'd not have come across it, HE-AAC 5.1 does exist out there; the recently-launched Freeview HD, the UK's terrestrial OTA HD platform, uses it for surround sound due to limited bandwidth on the multiplexes.

Finally, a supplementary question: is there likely to be any support for AC-3 encoding?

  • If I may tack on a few related questions here:

    1) Is Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 on your road map?

    2) Is audio normalization an option or roadmap item?

    Thanks
