Hard Disk Space Requirements for Windows 10 + Visual Studio + Xamarin Platform (including emulators) RRS feed

  • Question

  • User320973 posted

    I know that Windows 10 installation needs approx 16 GB, Visual Studio 2017 community edition needs around 40GB max. If I want to install Xamarin platform SDKs and emulators on the hard disk as well as create and execute apps, how much HDD space should I be looking at? Estimation?

    Thanks in advance, -Mamta

    @MamtaDalal

    A minimum of ~150 Gb is free space required

    VS 2017 Community   ~3 Gb
    Windows SDK         ~5 Gb
    Xamarin             ~1 Gb
    Android SDK         ~20 Gb
    Android AVD         ~25 Gb
    Others ~20 Gb (Runtime, Optional, Extras - Web Tools etc.)

    Total               ~80 Gb

    So ideally, as per your specific ask 150+ Gb disk should suffice, I have 150 Gb (148 Gb as allocated) VHD for my VirtualBox setup which runs W10 Pro + VS 2017 Pro + Xamarin + Optional Extras + Photoshop + Bunch of other stuff (Images, Raw files etc)

    After all that, I have close to 20 Gb free on the disk.

    Yes in that case I use an actual device (Android phone). As you said we cannot run emulator if we are using a virtual environment.

    However I strongly suggest not use Virtual Eviornment for long term goals, should be fine for learning or hobby projects.

    Thanks Hardik. Initially I did have them on VirtualBox but I couldn't get a single emulator running because VirtualBox was already running on virtualization and you cannot have both HXAM and VirtualBox. So without the emulators there was no way for me to test the code on the fly. How are you executing your code in the VirtualBox? Which emulator are you using?
