How to connect to remote database using RDS and ADO.NET RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello all-

I have a remote access database at a hosting provider that has an access database.  I have an excerpt from their knowledgebase explaining what is set up:

To use RDS to connect to your database you need to register your database as an ODBC data source. Be sure to check "Enable for RDS" checkbox.

When ODBC DSN is created you need to use these settings to connect to the RDS on your server:

    • RDS Server name: http://www.mydomain.com/
    • RDS Connect string: Data Source=mydatasource

How can I ( or is it even possible to) connect to this database using ADO.NET in a WinForms application written in Visual Basic .NET?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

  • I believe RDS is not supported for a couple of years already and was supported only with COM-based ADO, not with ADO.NET.

  • You will probably need to build a web service to handle the remote data source. As Val mentioned, this technology is not supported under ADO.NET.
