  • Hi,

Indeed, you can migrate the domain from one server to another:

    • Join win2012 to the domain
    • Promote to Domain Controller
    • Install DNS role and check that your domain zone has replicated correctly
    • transfer FSMO roles
    • Demote SBS2003 from the domain and unjoin
    • Cleanup objects from "Domain Sites and Services"
    • Check Domain health (dcdiag.exe)

    To transfer FSMO roles:

    1. on your domain controller run ntdsutil.exe
    2. On the prompt type roles
    3. Type connections
    4. Type connect to server <new domain controller>
    5. Type quit
    6. Type transfer PDC
    7. Type transfer Infrastructure Master
    8. Type transfer naming master
    9. Type transfer RID master
    10. Type transfer Schema master
    11. Type select operation target
    12. Type list roles for connected server to verify that the new server holds all 5 roles

Note, that after you transfer the domain to Win12 you won't be able to have the SBS2003 active in your network.

  • Hi,

I'm kind of in the same boat.  We have a closed network using Server2003 and we want to move to our Server2008 machines.  Can I assume the steps above would work to move our domain from Server2003 to Server2008?

    Thanks

  • Yes, it is the same process.

  • Thank you for your reply and your time.  I hope you don't mind another question.  When I do this, if there is a failure, as an example one of the roles does not come across, what then?  Let's say I do this and 2003 is still handling the logins, how do I force 2008 to start handling them instead?

    Thanks

  • In such case, you are gonna need a troubleshooting session specific to your problem. Before you decide to seize any FSMO role (it is an option by the way) you should take any appropriate actions to get it transfered to avoid complications.

In the case you described above for example, you should begin checking your DNS domain SRV records and the PDC role holder.
