Error launching application

    Question

  • I have a very simple app... It just loads some data from a server, it runs ok when running from Visual Studio (F5).

But, when I created the appx package and installed it via PowerShell the app shows me the splash screen for a little bit and then it closes itself.

In the event Viewer I got this error: App WorkWithDevicesTransaction1_6f78njyw3rst2!App did not launch within its allotted time.

    And this "infromation":

  • Ok, I found my issue so I thought of sharing my solution.

The message itself had nothing to do with the error message. As I mentioned, I was generated the Appx file myself via MakeAppx. The thing was that my AppxManifest.xml file was a copy of the package.appxmanifest file which does not have the dependencies tag. Once I added that tag it all started to run.

I got there because removing what seemed to be the problematic files, I saw in the Event Viewer the message 'WinJS is not recognized' (or similar).

So, that was it. Thanks again for your time.

  • Hi Sebastian,

When you run in the debugger we disable the OS from shutting down your app if it takes too long to load (so you can debug the startup).

Your application is taking to long to load.  Make sure you do not do any server calls in the startup.  You can put up a fake splash screen while you load your data if this is necessary in your case.

    See this sample: http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/windowsapps/Splash-screen-sample-89c1dc78

  • Hi Jeff, I do have an extended splash implemented... are you suggesting it is not working? When I debug the app I see my extended splash with the progress ring and everything...

Have you noticed that in the log there's a mention to one of my js files? (app_security.js) Do you know whay is that there? Could it be an error with that file?

Thanks again for your quick answer.

  • Hi Sebastian,

It is impossible to tell without fully debugging your app, but my best guess is that you include that file in your main page and it has a self executing anonymous function that is executing and causing the timeout.

  • Ok, I understand... but as I mentioned I cannot debug it cause what ever is causing the timeout, is not doing it while debugging :(

I'll try debugging that file in order to get more info... will post here what I find... thanks for the heads up

  • I'm thinking I'm creating the package with something wrong... as I mentioned, splash screen is not firing and I just realized that the app_security.js file is the first referenced file in my default.html file.

I bet there's something wrong with my package... which I'm creating myself via command line... will take a further look into that

  • You wrote "Your application is taking to long to load" (sic).  From what was posted, how do you tell?
