Also like to konw the version(2010, 2007) and what are the pre- request hardware and software to be installed for stand alone purpose. Would appriciate if any one direct me to right way.
Note: We got an OS in the system is Win XP Pro

Hi Sri,
For SharePoint 2010, you require a 64-bit Hardware and Operating System(Win7 and Win2008 R2). Download the Evaluation Guide for SharePoint 2010, which has complete details on the Hardware and Software Requirements.
This is a SharePoint 2010 specific forum and you will not get response on SharePoint 2007 related questions. In future, for SharePoint 2007 questions, please post your queries here.
You can also download the SharePoint 2007 Evaluation guide.
NOTE: SharePoint is a Server Product and it cannot be installed on Win XP Pro.
Thanks & Regards,
