Starting instance of host '' on server '' failed. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

I am installing BizTalk Server 2013 on multi server environment. I am able to configure the following components:

    1. SQL Cluster

    2. ENSSO Cluster as part of SQL Cluster

    3. MSDTC CLuster as part of SQL Cluster

    4. COnfigured BizTalk Group, ESSO, BRE on one of the BizTalk Servers

While configuring "BizTalk Runtime" I am getting "Access Denied" error.

So I tried Creating the BizTalk Host Instance from BizTalk Admin Console and was able to create it, but while starting the host instance I am getting the below error:

"Starting instance of host '' on server '' failed. Permission is denied. The current user does not have sufficient permissions to perform this operation. (WinMgmt)"

Below is the configuration for servers:

    • BizTalk Domain Account is added to BizTalk and SQL local Admin group
    • BizTalk Domain Account has "Logon as Service" rights
    • BizTalk Domain Account and BizTalk Admin Group is "db_owner" on SQL

I am not sure what all permissions are missing. Please provide suggestions!!

  • Did you create AD groups as suggested in the installation/setup guides?

    Eg
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/biztalk/core/windows-groups-and-user-accounts-in-biztalk-server

Do NOT add service accounts to the local Administrators group, this is a potential security risk

Host Instance Account must be member of BizTalk Application Users and SSO Affiliate Administrators (AD groups)
Please review the above document for best practice

  • Hi,

    Thanks for the reply!!

Yes all the AD groups are created and also provided with the permissions/roles as suggested in the document.

SSO and BizTalk service account has been added to the appropriate AD groups as in the document.

    Still facing the issue:

  • It seems that is not going about problem with host instance account but probably you don't have rights to start that host...check whether your account is member of BizTalk admin / SSO admin group.

  • BizTalk Service Account is the member of BizTalk Admin, SSO Admin group
    Monday, October 22, 2018 10:52 AM
  • BizTalk service account should not be member of these groups.

Account via you are trying to start hosts to be member of BizTalk admin / SSO admin group.

  • Hi,

Yes I am logged in with the service account on system and trying to start the instances. Also my own account is a member of BizTalk Admin/SSO Admin group, but getting the same error from either of the logins.

  • Just to add, while configuring the "BizTalk Runtime" from BizTalk Configuation Manager, I am getting the same error:

"[BizTalk Runtime] Failed to configure with error message [Permission is denied. The current user does not have sufficient permissions to perform this operation.]"

    Any help would be appreciated!!

  • Is the configuration error before or after you got the first error (unable to start service)

    Please note:
Account logged in with desktop and starting/stopping services should be your BizTalk Admin account
Service Accounts should NOT be allowed to login on the desktop (security risk)

    /Peter

  • please add BizTalk admin group to local admin group on BizTalk and SQL machine

  • I tried configuring the BizTalk Runtime from BizTalk Configuration Manager first and it was giving me the above error, so I manually created the Host and Host Instance.

And when I tried starting the Host Instance, it again gave me the "Access Denied" error

  • Added the BizTalk Admin Group on both the SQL and BizTalk Servers local admin group. But still having the same issue.

Can this be related to some firewall blocking or network issue?

This should not be done manually not atleast for the first two default host and their instances that get created while configuring the runtime, this suggest some basic issue which you should deal with first before trying other things

What user you were using to configure the BizTalk?

  • I tried with both my own account and BizTalk service account by logging into the server.

Also while doing the custom configuration, selected the BizTalk service account (which has admin rights on server).

  • I am getting the same "Access Denied" issue while configuring BizTalk Server Runtime Conponent on Single Server Installation (SQL and BizTalk on same system).

I created a local user named "BTSAdmin" and added it to local Administrator group and also provided sysadmin permissions to this user in DB.

Any idea why this issue is coming in a single server where I am not even using the domain groups/users.

  • Did you install BTS as admin on the server and the setup is run as administrator?
Same with configuration use run as administrator

I don't understand why you have all the problems you have

Please review this document and check if you have missed one or more steps or maybe some prerequisites
