Unable to expand hvd due to file system limitations RRS feed

  • Question

  • When trying to expand 160GB fixed VHD to 250GB got this error in in Hyper-V console: expanding disk failed due to file system limitation.

I was able to expand it to 180GB, but further attempts to expand to 250GB or 200GB fail.

    Error in event log:

    Source: Hyper-V-Image-Management-Service

    Event ID: 15064

'The system failed to expand 'D:\Hyper-V\Sirius\Data.vhd'. Error Code: 2424869

Host is Windows 2008 R2 Datacenter with SP1.

Guest is Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise with SP1. System 30GB VHD and data 180GB VHD stored on 1 TB HDD with 310GB available space.

Neither host nor guest disks are compressed and have never been.

    Disabling antivirus did not help.

Both, host and guest disks are defragmented.

Data VHD contains basic disk with one NTFS partition.

I am able to create new 250GB disk.

What could be wrong with expanding?
