Support for Windows Sensor and Location Platform? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Jim Travis (of Microsoft) on 9/22/2008 wrote a paper "Introducing the Windows Sensor and Location Platform" (http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/d/f/adf1347d-08dc-41a4-9084-623b1194d4b2/Introducing_Sensors.docx).

    The Abstract is:
"This paper provides an overview of a new development platform from Microsoft that facilitates the use of sensors, including location sensors such as global positioning system (GPS) devices, in the Windows 7 operating system."

My question is: What plans, if any, does the Robotics Studio team have to support the Windows Sensor and Location Platform?

  • We are aware of the new sensors API. However, it is not intended specifically for robotics, but rather for things like tilt sensors, light sensors, etc. that might be built into computers such as laptops. Also, the API is for C++ (using COM) so it will need to be wrapped for use with CCR/DSS because we use only managed code.

We will look at providing a sample service to enable access to sensors this way after Win7 is released. Bear in mind though that the sensors are supposed to be directly connected to the computer and the device driver support should come from the manufacturer of the computer and/or sensor.
