  • Technically, you can send and receive EDI without custom Parties or Agreements by using the Fallback Settings.

However, you really should use Parties and Agreements so my answer to the question of when would be always.

Here are some great video tutorials on BizTalk EDI, two of which cover Parties and Agreements.

  • You will need parties when you have use EDI receive or EDI send pipelines.

This forces, the runtime to go look in parties. If no party is availble for that Sender/Receiver combination. (ISA06 is sender) , it goes to fallback settings.

If you have certain requiremnts about Interchange header (ISA segment) and Group header (GS Segment) , it is advised to create your new Parties (2) and a common agreement between the and add the settings that you want to appear when generating edi file or used for validation when receiving EDI file.

Some, other additional purposes are you can do validation against schema ( specified in parties) which allows only messages compliant to that schema and suspended (or rejects) anything invalid.

    Thanks
