Windows Biometric Framework WIN10 vs WIN7/8 : WINBIO_E_NOT_ACTIVE_CONSOLE RRS feed

  • Question

  • Currently, I am developing a Windows Service to capture a fingerprint using the Windows Biometric Framework. I have this working on a Windows 10 Home & Windows 10 Pro machine, but the exact same service is NOT working on either Windows 7 Pro or Windows 8.1 Pro (did not test on Home for 7 or 8).

The error I receive occurs when calling WinBioOpenSession (https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd401634%28v=vs.85%29.aspx). The exact error is:

    0x80098038 WINBIO_E_NOT_ACTIVE_CONSOLE

I have found a thread on msdn which is related: https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/d1eccfba-fa13-4abb-904b-c58039e66ad7/biometrics-and-windows-services?forum=windowssecurity

However, my question is why my service is not throwing this error on a WIN10 machine, and why it is throwing it on a 7-8 machine. Have there been any changes, and can I assume that these changes will be persisted for the future?
