Data transfer on to virtual PC RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am new to the wince environment and trying to execute small application.

Application is to " send and receive the data from the physical device (desktop) to the Virtual device and vice-versa".

I am unable to send or receive the data from the physical device (desktop) to the Virtual device and vice-versa.

I explored below option's to complete the data transfer task:-

Clicked on menu "Tools->remote tools->file viewer" an file viewer window with small window "Select a windows embedded compact device" opened, In "Select a windows embedded compact device" under "windows embedded compact default platform" I choosed auto(ether) and clicked ok, connection establishing window was displayed for a while, after some time it showed "windows embedded compact file viewer has stopped working. A problem caused to stop working correctly. windows will close the program and notify you if solution is available" i chose close program and file viewer window closed.

I couldn't able to figure out the actual reason for these experience in wince as i am new to it.

Can any one help me out in figuring out the actual reason and complete the data transfer task? and / or

Also please let me know is there any other way to complete the data exchange task ?

I wander is any limitation of Virtual PC is give such problem ? - If yes can i know the limitation of the "virtual PC"?

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,

    Wince Beginner

  • What is the WinCE version you are using?

While connecting the Remote file viewer,is your Virtual PC connected to your Platform builder via KITL?

  • You said "i chose close program and file viewer window closed.", but what happens if you do not choose to close the program, but instead are patient?

You said "Also please let me know is there any other way to complete the data exchange task ?", but didn't tell us even one small hint as to what the requirement actually is.   I could probably spend the rest of the day typing in other ways to "exchange data".

You said "I wander is any limitation of Virtual PC is give such problem ? - If yes can i know the limitation of the "virtual PC"?", but isn't this a problem with an application running on your physical device?   Anyway, you didn't mention any problems with the virtual device, but for that matter you didn't mention any problems with the physical device.   So maybe you need to describe what you are doing better - what is running on the physical device and what is running on the virtual device?

    My response is in bold.

You said "i chose close program and file viewer window closed.", but what happens if you do not choose to close the program, but instead are patient?--- Nothing no progress will be achieved.

You said "Also please let me know is there any other way to complete the data exchange task ?", but didn't tell us even one small hint as to what the requirement actually is.   I could probably spend the rest of the day typing in other ways to "exchange data".------- Requirement is to just transmit some data from one system(desktop) to another system(virtual PC to begin with later on with another desktop's/laptops ). Data can be contents of text, excel, system information,register's.....etc anything.

--------------I am not running any application on the physical device since from file viewer it is possible to transfer/delete/create file/data on to remote device (over here virtual PC).

Adding may i know is it possible to execute all the functionality on virtual device without any restriction?

  • For "Tools->remote tools->file viewer" to work, you can use either KITL or ActiveSync.

You selected auto(ether). In this case the device should be connected to the host using Ethernet KITL.

You can also use USB KITL. In this case you have to select auto(USB).

The other option is to use ActiveSync. For this, the OS image must have the USB Device functionality and ActiveSync enabled. In this case, you should select Windows CE Device.

  • Thanks for reply.

I am not connecting the host using ActiveSync or USB KITL but auto(ether) yes.

I am able to execute Hello world or any printf strings on the virtual PC console.

  • Check the following location of your OSdesign for the KITL connection is enabled or not.

    Project-->Properties-->Configuration Properties-->Build Options-->Enable KITL(IMGNOKITL=)

If the KITL connection is live then while Virtual PC is booting you can see the console message in the Platform builder Output window. With the KITL connection you can connect to the Virtual PC by selecting the auto(ether) connection.

  • Thanks for the response.

With  "Project-->Properties-->Configuration Properties-->Build Options-->Enable KITL(IMGNOKITL=)" found it as "Yes (IMGNOKITL=)" and able to execute Helloword.exe(my first programme), ping.exe.

with  "Yes (IMGNOKITL=)" and "No (IMGNOKITL=1)" i am facing same problem i.e remotetools--->fileviewer.

  • With "Yes(IMGNOKITL=)",what messages or log you are seeing in the Platform Builder/VS2012 output window?

When you try to connect the fileviewer you will see some log messages, are you getting that?

  • Based on your answers to my questions, it is very clear that you have not described the problem well at all.

What OS is running on the virtual device?  Tell us about it.

What OS is running on the Physical device?  Tell us about it.

We cannot see what you are doing, so it is up to you to tell us what you are doing.  I have a feeling that there is a lot of guessing, and incorrect guessing, going on.

What OS is running on the Physical device?  Tell us about it.

    Windows 7.

FYI- I am using Visual Studio 2012 and WINCE2013.

  • Your response is very incomplete.  I am even more convinced that there is a lot of guessing going on.  If you aren't running Windows Compact on any of the systems, why are you asking your questions here?

We cannot see what you are doing, so it is up to you to tell us what you are doing.  What are you doing?

  • Hi Bruce:

I believe he deployed the Compact 2013 OS in VirtualPC and he is trying to connect and transfer some files to Compact 2013 VirtualPC from the VS2012 OSDesign. But i am not sure is my assumption right?

  • Prabu:

You believe?  I know that you believe, but the OP was clear that Windows 7 is running on the Virtual Device!  The OP further keeps referring to abstract concepts like "virtual PC", "physical device" and "desktop" like they mean anything when no valid context is given.

Apparently this problem is not important enough to Wince Beginner to provide the information.

For that life of me, I can't tell where Windows Compact is running or if in fact it is running.

  • Since you clearly told us that both the virtual device and the physical device are running Windows 7, why don't you just use Windows Explorer and map a network drive?

    Done.

Or one more time...  We cannot see what you are doing, so it is up to you to tell us what you are doing.  What are you doing?

  • Hi,

    1> In http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj200354.aspx

In Prerequisites topic there is sub-topic Supported operating systems MY windows 7 reference was about it. This itself is my physical device i.e Normal PC/desktop.

    2> In http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj200348.aspx#WindowsVirtualPC

Windows Virtual PC is my virtual PC and hence my virtual device.

    - I have followed the same metholodgy for installing windows compact embedded 2013 and visual 2012.

    Now,

    Requirement is:-

From physical device using visual 2012(Tools->remote tools->file viewer)
I want to create/delete/rename/import/export file's on my virtual device.

Hope this will give clarity and hence solution.
