Relationship direction RRS feed

  • Question

  • After loading two tables in the PowerPivot window, I tried establishing a relationship among them.  Neither one is a pure dimensional table which servers as the lookup for the other one, both of the have dimension and fact data.  However, it appears that only when configuring the relationship in a specific direction the data is mapped properly; if we reverse the direction data is not mapped anymore.   This is strange considering both could be a lookup of each other (one thing to note is that the relationship key should be a composite of multiple columns, for which I built a calculated column on both sides which is a string composite value.  This is the key that is used in the relationship)

Why would the relationship only work in one direction?

  • Can you please expand on what is stored in each table and how you feel that they are related?  Without knowing what is stored in each table it is hard to offer any additional advice.

It sounds like you have two fact tables that have the dimension data embedded in them instead of separate.  It is almost like you need a third table or just leave the data as is for analysis without relationships and each table gets analyzed on its own.
