PowerPivot is an Excel add-in provided by Microsoft that can be used to analyze large amount of data pulled from many different sources. The analysis is done by In memory engine which provides excellent data compression and speed. You can get more information on PowerPivot from many web blogs as well as the folloofficical site for PowerPivot http://powerpivot.com/.

And the PowerPivot for SharePoint is part of the SQL Server 2008 R2, which is how the workbooks created by the PowerPivot for Excel can be shared and updated periodically on the background.
You can check out these other good blogs:http://powerpivotpro.com/ and http://powerpivotgeek.com/
