Task BCWS vs. Resource BCWS RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a VBA program that picks up the BCWS from each task and processes it. The values being retrieved are not what I expected. The screen shot below illustrates the problem. I enter Actual Work in the Resource Usage view, and it produces the correct BCWS for the associated resource. The BCWS I'm picking up from the task, however, is a different value. How do I get the value entered for the resource? Alternatively, how do I force the task to have the correct value?

Example: see Tsk01, period 3. The rate for R1 is $100/hr. The $3,200 that appears against the resource is correct. The $3,750 that appears against the task is incorrect and is causing the program to produce misleading results.

  • RobVV,

It took me a few minutes to refresh my memory on BWCP but here is why the two BCWP values are not the same.

In the Task usage view you are looking at two things, task data and assignment data. For a task, the BCWP is calculated as percent complete times the baseline cost. The screen shot doesn't show what percent complete is for the task but it is probably 31.25%, assuming the baseline cost at task level is $12,000.

For the assignment, R1, BCWP is calculated as percent work complete times the baseline cost. In your example, 32 out of 120 hours have been completed so the percent work complete is 26.66%. Therefore at the end of the second week, the BCWP is $3200.

    Hope this helps.

  • I have the same problem but my EVM calculations are based on Physical % Complete but not % Complete or % Work Complete. Any idea what the issue could be?

  • Agasthya, using P%C for EVM requires multiple steps. I suggest that you check out Jim Aksel's white paper on the topic. If you're still having problems after implementing his procedure, let me know.

  • Hi Rob,

I had followed all steps from the blog except the ones with the cost codes.

My issue happens only for the tasks for which EVM were calculated before and then they were re-baselined.

Initially before the re-baseline of a task all the EVM data at Task and Resource level are equal but when the tasks are re-baselined the EVM BCWP data gets changed and shows incorrect data.

The data before rebaseline looks like below:

    Task2 ACWP $8.00 $8.00 $8.00 $12.00 $20.00 $28.00 $36.00 $38.00 $38.00 $38.00 $38.00 $38.00
      BCWP $5.00 $5.00 $5.00 $10.00 $15.00 $20.00 $25.00 $30.00 $30.00 $30.00 $35.00 $40.00
      ACWP $8.00 $8.00 $8.00 $12.00 $20.00 $28.00 $36.00 $38.00 $38.00 $38.00 $38.00 $38.00
                       Resource 2 BCWP $40.00 $40.00 $40.00 $40.00 $40.00 $40.00 $40.00 $40.00 $40.00 $40.00 $40.00 $40.00

The data after rebaseline looks like below:

    Task1-Resource1   assigned BCWP $2.40 $4.80 $7.20 $7.20 $7.20 $9.60 $12.00
      ACWP $4.00 $8.00 $12.00 $12.00 $12.00 $16.00 $22.00

                  Resource1 BCWP $18.60 $18.60 $18.60 $18.60 $18.60 $18.60 $18.60
      ACWP $4.00 $8.00 $12.00 $12.00 $12.00 $16.00 $22.00
