Excel error after moving cube from one server to another RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are have a cube on Server 1 and all users are having their excel reports connected to the Server 1 with all the filters in it.

When we have to move the cube from Server 1 to Server 2 how can we make this move seemless to the user. When we try to re-establish the connection it is giving following error. What are the options to make it seemless?

    Thanks much for any help,

  • Hi

You don't have many options now that the connection information is already embedded into the individual Excel documents. but here are a few options.

Excel supports a connection file called an (Office Data Connection) .ODC file. This .Odc is hosted in SharePoint (You may be able to host in somewhere else, i'm not 100% sure), every time the Excel Document is opened the .Odc file is refreshed and the new connection string referenced, that way if you change server you can change the connection in a single location. It is most likely too late to use this method.

You may have the option is to add a new DNS entry for the old server (Server1) pointing to the new server (Server2) this way any attempts to connect will simply redirect to the new server. You may also be able to use Port forwarding (I've never tried that so don't know how successful it would be) (These are things you network administrator should be able to help you with)

Finally another option may be to write a simple Application that loops through all the Excel files and updated the connection information. This would not be a great option but is possible

Hope one of these options work for you.
