Windows 10 OOBE Azure AD Join Computername & remote management

    Question

  • I was wondering if there is a way to change the computername when joining a device to AAD? When we purchase laptop an asset tag is applied in factory, this asset tag consist of a unique number e.g. CORP-12345. This tag is used for financial management and in our current on-premises solution is also used as a host name.

We've been experimenting with Azure AD Join and the very first thing we noticed is that a device, freshly installed with Windows 10, enrolled with the OOBE wizard, will join AAD using a DESKTOP-<RANDOM SEQUENCE> name. This can be changed in Windows after joining (for instance with a script in Intune matching serial numbers/mac addresses etc), but this does not change the computer information in AAD. After changing the computername from DESKTOP-123ABC to CORP-12345 it will not change this in Azure AD.

Also, how do you perform remote management in an AAD Joined world? Browsing to \\CORP-12345\C$\Logs will no longer be possible, initiating a remote help session from our servicedesk directly to CORP-12345 would also no longer be possible (as the device is not legacy domain joined)

    Thanks, for any insights.
