  • Question

  • Hello All,

    I downloaded Compact2013Update5_Full.ISO from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=42287

But key provided on this forum doesn't work.

    Topic with key: https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/3d85fb69-b83f-4c23-ab3d-224f99ede0dc/difference-between-windows-embedded-compact-2013-trial-key-and-downloaded-version?forum=winembplatdev

Also download page for generating trial key mentioned in the thread above is not available: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsembedded/en-us/download-compact-2013.aspx

BUT, why do you want to evaluate Compact 2013?  Standard support for the product ended last month.

  • Hello Bruce,

I saw this already, and as I specified in my initial question – I did everything as you described there, i.e. downloaded Update 5 (from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42287) and tried to use the key specified (from https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/3d85fb69-b83f-4c23-ab3d-224f99ede0dc/difference-between-windows-embedded-compact-2013-trial-key-and-downloaded-version?forum=winembplatdev).

I have to support old mobile application, so I need to be able to run it on my Windows 10.

Then you should purchase the product.

  • Bruce,

So there is no any possibility of getting trial for now?

    Thursday, November 8, 2018 8:09 AM
  • I didn't say that, did I?

Based on your usage, which is maintaining an existing product, legal people would tell  that you need to purchase a license.

  • Right, but based on my question – I need to get a trial, because I'd like to ensure first that this is what I actually need.

So if you can help with the topic, I would really appreciate this.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Well then, lets discuss what you really need.

What is it that you are doing?  You say "I have to support old mobile application, so I need to be able to run it on my Windows 10" which is sufficiently vague as to not tell us what you are doing.

What is a "mobile app" to you?
If by mobile, you mean Windows Mobile - what version? How do you plan to run it on Windows 10? (What is "it"?)
Why do you plan to run it on Windows 10?
Do you have an SDK for the device that you plan to run it on?

Do you have a BSP for the device?
Do you have the code for the app?
What kind of project files does it use?
Does it have a sources or dirs file?

  • Bruce,

I wonder why in other topics you just gave the answer and in this one you request the details, but anyway - as much as I can tell:

    Mobile app = Windows CE application, I have sources;

I want to run it on Windows 10 by creating Hyper-V VM, and this is why I need WEC 2013.

  • Because you are providing vague information and not answering my questions.

    Good luck.

  • Bruce,

I can't answer all your questions - it's not my own application.

I just need to know how to get the trial, that's all, and I believe you don't actually need all this information to help me with this.

Anyway, thank you for your time and efforts taken.

  • So you have decided on a solution.  So go ahead with your solution.  If you can't answer my questions, I find it difficult to believe that using Platform Builder will help you.

I don't know what your problem is though, or requirements.   If we understand what you are trying to solve, there may be other solutions.  Hence, my questions.

  • rshestakou,

We really are trying to help you, but as Bruce already said, the more info we have, the better we can help you.

Read this and maybe repost your question using the template found there. Include as much info as you can so we can help you better.

  • Hi,

If you are supporting an old mobile application, I doubt that you would need Windows Embedded Compact 2013 platform builder.

Rather than that, you would need the following:

    - VS2012, VS2013 or VS2015 - You need MSDN subscription for this unless you have an old copy around.

    - Application builder for Windows Embedded Compact 2013 - Free download from MS

    - SDK for the platform you are deploying the application to (depending on whether the application interfaces with any hardware you may not need this) - you should be able to get this from the manufacturer of the platform.

You only need Platform Builder if you are looking to develop/support the OS layer, but it doesn't sound like you are.

*Looking at some of your other comments:

If you are looking at using Platform Builder to develop a 'virtual' Windows CE device to test your application on instead of testing it on the actual device, I would advise against this, a PC is a completely different platform to a Windows CE device so it would be very difficult to get any sensible test results from it.

My recommendation for testing your code on a Windows 10 desktop environment would be to set up a second build of your code targeting the Windows 10 native environment, that way you can implement modern testing methods like unit testing as well.

That is a very well thought out response - well done, if his application is that new.   But one of the reasons that I have not provided that information is that his old Windows CE application may be old enough to require a completely different set of tools - much older tools.

So I am still stuck with not enough information to assist.
