System query options in service actions RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Currently service actions doesn't support system query options like $orderby and $filter, because service actions cannot be further composed. Is there any plan to implement this in future releases of WCF DS? Or is there any plan to implement similar feature (other than service operations because they cannot be invoked on resources, but only from root).

  • Hi,

The protocol does support this, it's called "Functions". They can be bound to a resource just like Actions, but they use GET (usually) and they can return composable results (that is you can use query options on the results). They are also assumed to not have side effects (they use GET).

WCF Data Service on the other hand currently doesn't support Functions though.

    Thanks,

  • Thanks for the reply. Is there any plan to implement Functions in WCF Data Service in coming releases?

  • Functions will not be coming to WCF DS in the next few months. It is a fairly large feature, and now that the WCF DS team has moved to more frequent, smaller releases, I would guess that when we do add support it will be over several releases. If you keep checking with us and make some noise, it will help bump up its prioritization.
