  • Question

  • Hi Guys,

I'm working on a service that makes use of custom tile layers.

The client is concerned about the text being hidden from the tile layers so I've discovered this technique here:

    http://alastaira.wordpress.com/2011/05/13/displaying-labels-on-top-of-bing-maps-custom-tile-layers/

Which does exactly what the client wants. It makes use of two tile services:

    http://ecn.t2.tiles.virtualearth.net/tiles/ho{quadkey}?g=671&mkt=en-gb

This is a custom layer so I wondered if there are any licencing concerns usign this layer?

Finally I want to generate images for the client from this layer and my custom tile layers. Are there any further licencing concerns with this.

I read somewhere about using a token to allow access to this is that correct and do I need to use the token when compiling my image layers?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi -

I do not believe either using the above URL as custom URL or locally storing the map tiles from URL is allowed under terms of usage of APIs.

For specific details, you can always contact licensing portal at http://www.microsoft.com/maps/product/licensing.aspx.

    Thanks

  • Tokens no longer exist. Directly accessing the tiles is against the terms of use and requires an Enterprise license at a minimum. Storing tiles is 100% against the terms of use for all users.

  • Thanks. Thought so!

I have a problem... I have an application with a lot of custom tile layers. I want to display labels over the top of the custom layers.

What solutions do I have. I can't find in the documentation anyway of getting labels and map tiles separately i.e. Map labels are always baked in? I've found the solution above which gives me what I need but appears to my mind to be against the terms of use. Are there any other solutions which do not contravene the terms of use of the licence agreement?
