Shutdown server RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have Windows 8 server running in a VM on my laptop.  I do enjoy that.  However, I find it incredibly difficult to shut down the server.  The root of the problem is that the traditional start menu is no longer functional and takes you into metro.  The other problem is that if you are using this on a server or laptop without touch, you cannot do a right-edge swipe.  How do we shut down the server without using the VM host or starting a command line and entering shutdown as a command?  There has to be an easy way to shut down the server.

    1. Alt+F4 while on the desktop.
    2. Move your cursor to the bottom left of the screen, select Settings.
    3. Log off, then use the power button on the bottom right of the logon
    screen.
    4. CTRL+ALT+DEL then as in option 3.

  • Thanks, that was very helpful.

I was noticing that sometimes when I was on the start menu it would pop up the submenu which would allow me access to settings and other times it would not.  You have just explained that enigma for me.  If you move your mouse to the very lower left pixel of the screen, it will pop up the option required to switch to the charm screen.  Thanks for that tip.  It is not obvious!  This also answers another thing for me - of how to echo the right-edge swipe with the mouse - simply move your mouse to the lower left of the screen.

You get double points for answering this one.
