Backup of SQL Database on Azure VM: Windows logins are not supported in this version of SQL Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have an Azure VM with installed SQL Server (non-Marketplace SQL VM). I am trying to set up a backup process and stuck on when you need to grant permissions to service account NT SERVICE\AzureWLBackupPluginSvc. This account is used for backup and restore and needs to have SQL sysadmin permission.

Now, when I logged in VM and trying to log in to SQL Management Studio (using Windows Authentication) to grant permissions I am getting this error messagae:

Windows logins are not supported in this version of SQL Server. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 40607)

I am following this instructions https://docs.microsoft.com/en-in/azure/backup/backup-azure-sql-database#set-permissions-for-non-marketplace-sql-vms and it's just doesn't work for me.

Would be appreciated for the advice.

  • Sorted by adding a user required windows authentication to the domain with administrator previligies.
