Geocode question for some address RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have used the http://dev.virtualearth.net/REST/v1/Locations to get the latitude/longitude using c#. It works most of the times but recently we encounter following issue. When we tried to get the latitude/longitude of below address then it gives us wrong latitude/longitude. But when enter INDIANA instead of IN then it gives correct latitude/longitude. Can you please let us know how to resolve such kind of issue.

1072 E Market St Hillsboro IN 47949 gives 36.07152/ -79.77840 which is wrong.

1072 E Market St Hillsboro INDIANA 47949 gives 40.10745/ -87.15383 which is correct.

    Waiting for your reply.

    Thanks!

  • Hi All,

Could anyone please help us in understanding the above issue. Why it is giving different geocode when 'IN' is short code for 'INDIANA' state only. @Ricky_Brundritt

Thanks for the help in advance.

  • Looks like it doesn't find the street number when searching with Indiana, but finds the exact street address (different everything else). Looks like a bad alternative when it couldn't find an exact match. Will pass along to the geocoding team to look at.

Note that I work on the forums in my own time as a hobby as I'm passionate about Bing Maps. Answering questions on the forums is not my job :)

  • Hi Ricky,

    Thank You for reply.

I apologize in case it sound rude by asking you directly. Customer got panicked and wasn't sure whether all the other addresses have been Geo-coded correctly or not and we couldn't find any logic behind this issue. Customer reply a lot on locational intelligence.

Thank You for your reply. I once again apologize for this.

    Have a wonderful day ahead!

  • Hi,

We tried to geocode the below address

    5478 Wellington Rd # 2 Clifford Ontario N0G 2L0 Canada

    then it throws below error.

System.Exception: Geocode: GetResponse The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized.

But when we remove # from address then it does not throw error and gives latitude/longitude.

We have used following service http://dev.virtualearth.net/REST/v1/Locations and used C# code to execute and get latitude and longitude.

Can you please let us know how to resolve above issue or any alternative way to do get latitude/longitude. We used bing map V8.

    Thanks!

  • You need to encode your URL parameters, otherwise special characters such as # have other meanings in URLs. See the best practices for the REST services here: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn894107.aspx
