[E2016][MailApp][Outlook2016] Command button does not show icon defined in manifest RRS feed

  • Question

  • I try to use the new command bar customization of Office Addins, in my case for a Mail-App.

    So I enhanced the app manifest by adding <VersionOverrides>...

    <VersionOverrides xmlns="" xsi:type="VersionOverridesV1_0">
          <bt:Sets DefaultMinVersion="1.3">
            <bt:Set Name="Mailbox" />
          <Host xsi:type="MailHost">

    With a button control like so:

                    <Control xsi:type="Button" id="msgRestoreButton">
                      <Label resid="funcRestoreLabel" />
                        <Title resid="funcRestoreTitle" />
                        <Description resid="funcRestoreDescription" />
                        <bt:Image size="16" resid="restore-icon-16" />
                        <bt:Image size="32" resid="restore-icon-32" />
                        <bt:Image size="80" resid="restore-icon-80" />

    And the icon URLs like so:

            <!-- Blue icon -->
            <bt:Image id="restore-icon-16" DefaultValue="https://some.web/myapp/Images/icon16.png" />
            <bt:Image id="restore-icon-32" DefaultValue="https://some.web/myapp/Images/icon32.png" />
            <bt:Image id="restore-icon-80" DefaultValue="https://some.web/myapp/Images/icon80.png" />

    The button appears with the correct label (specified in the Resources element as well), but the png files are not used as button images. Some Addin default icons appear instead.

    I can copy the URL into the browser where my OWA is open as well and the png is displayed without problems. So no problem of the png files and the manifest seems OK as well otherwise the Addin would not be loaded at all.

    Any idea what could be wrong? Outlook 2016 is fully patched.

  • Is the SSL certificate used by the server trusted? When you browse to the PNG file in the browser, do you get a warning about the cert? Outlook won't load the resource if the cert isn't trusted.

  • Yes, trusted CA, so no warning when opened in a browser.

    Can the addin communication be logged on the client side. Something like show add-in UI errors for COM Add-Ins?

  • I tried to capture https traffic with fiddler but could not see the add-in manifest download nor the GETs for the icon URLs. But still the commands are visible, with correct labels and incorrect icons.

    The RuleCollection seems ignored as well. I want the commands to be available only to a certain message class, but they appear for standard IPM.Note as well. This is my filter

      <Rule xsi:type="RuleCollection" Mode="Or">
        <Rule xsi:type="ItemIs" FormType="Read" ItemType="Message" ItemClass="IPM.Note.MyClass" IncludeSubClasses="true"/>

    Should the Rule element work for commands as well? I would like the command to be disabled or hidden on items with unsupported message classes.
