  • Question

I'm doing a project where i've to migrate COBOL user interactions or user interfaces to ASP.NET. I would like to have all the inputs and ideas as to the way i should go about it and also want a separate forum to be started on this, like some of the other migration forums. Your help in this regard will be appreciated. Regards, Shantonu Rae

COBOL.Net... it supports ASP.Net and it would be the fast way to get it done, then in the process you can start migrating chunks of the program. Or you could actually take the assemblies produced and decompile them and get back C# code.

Is it possible to expose the COBOL program as a Web Service? If yes, which will be easier WebForms or WebServices?

I don't see why not as long as you use it with the WebService interfaces. What do you mean by easier? First of all if this serves data that nobody else is going to need a WebService is not the best idea, because they tend to be slower than a straight webpage that is just fetching data using the System.Data or System.Xml. Also here is a link to Cobol.Net http://www.adtools.com/info/whitepaper/net.html

But seriously I would compile your Cobol application into a .Net DLL and then create a WebSite in your favorite language (VB or C# or whatever) that accesses that DLL.
