  • Question

  • Hi

i had installed SQL server 2012 in my laptop and it worked fine. Few days back my laptop crashed  so i re installed windows 8. After that when i installed SQL server 2012 i wasnt able to locate my local server instance. I googled it up tried so many things eventually i cane to know there are no services related to sqlserver running in my machine like SQL serve agent, mssqlserver etc.. when i open up the sscm there are no services listed. even i tried turning off my firewall it din work. someone please provide your thought to help me with this.

    Thanks in advance, Kartik

  • Looks like you only installed Management Studio:

SQL Server Management Studio Express (Tools only)
      • This does not contain the database, but only the tools to manage SQL Server instances, including LocalDB, SQL Express, SQL Azure, etc. Use this if you already have the database and only need the management tools. This package includes LocalDB.

      Microsoft® SQL Server® 2012 Express

      Try

      • Express (Containing only the database engine)
      • The core Express database server. Use this if you need to accept remote connections or administer remotely.

    Try: ENU\x64\SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe

  • Hello Kartik,

Which installer have you used? When you open Windows Service Manager snapin (services.msc) can you see any SQL Server related service there? Have you checked the SQL Server installation log if the installation finished with success?

  • Did you try recover the windows install or fresh install? In-case of fresh install, you may have to install all the applications (here SQL ) once again

  • sounds like you didn't select the database engine components; just management studio

  • Hello,

Please share with us the Discovery Report to see what is installed now. The following article will show you how to run this report:

    http://www.sqlcoffee.com/SQLServer2012_0014.htm

Share with us the Summary.txt log file also to identify any component that failed to install. The following article will help you locate the file on disk:

  • Hello,

Indeed that download only installs SQL Server Management Studio (a tool to manage SQL Server), but does not install the database engine.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hello,

You only installed LocalDB (a new version of SQL Server Express) and SQL Server management Studio). Please download the file mentioned by David (MSFT) above.

    Hope this helps.
