VS 2010 Will not install on Win XP SP3 Machine RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am currently having a problem installing Visual Studio 2010 on a Windows XP machine.  I have recently upgraded to Service Pack 3, via the Online Update and have confirmed this SP via the Control Panel->System (reads Windows XP Professional version 2002 Service Pack 3) ...I start the VS 2010 Install and it fails in the first step (installing .NET 4.0).  Here's the log (partial):

  • Hi Alan,

Based on the error message, it seems that Visual Studio 2010 installation could not be detect Windows XP SP3 on your machine.

One possible cause of your concern could be related to corrupted Windows XP SP3 installation. Could you please help me to check the following points

If you installed the standalone Windows XP SP3 update package (as opposed to purchasing a computer with Windows XP with SP3 pre-installed), you can attempt to repair or re-install Windows XP SP3.

If you have a computer that came pre-installed with Windows XP SP3, there is not a separate update package that can be repaired.
You can use steps like the ones in this knowledge base article (KB310747) to repair the files that are a part of the OS.

Then you can try to download .NET Framework 4.0 Stand alone installer and install it separately from Visual Studio 2010 installation. Then install Visual Studio 2010 again.

Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

    Best regards,

  • Ok.  I managed to work my way through this.  It turned out, our wonderful corporate tech team took it upon themselves to lock down (read only) my C:\Program Files directory.  So, once I cleared this up, it installed fne.  thanks.
