How to upgrade SQL Server2016 Release Candidate version to Enterprise edition?

    Question

  • Hi All,

We have SQL Server 2016 RC version installed in our Azure VM. We have SharePoint site integrated to this server. We are using list data for reporting purpose. Now, it's not accessible and says that the RC version has expired. We need to upgrade to Enterprise edition now. What all the steps should be done for this.? We have MSDN subscription available and tried to download enterprise version and do edition upgrade. That didn't work for us. Please suggest.

    Thanks,

    Julie

  • Hi Julie,

Do you want to buy own Licences or want to use Pay as you Go option in Azure VM with SQL Enterprise Edition?

How did you tried the edition upgrade? Did you started SQL server Setup > Maintenance > And Select Edition Upgrade?

    Thanks,

  • Hello Julie,

You only need the SQL Server license key from your MSDN subscription; it is embedded in the installer from MSDN and will be shown up in the second (or third) Installation wizard Dialog.

With that key you can perform an Edition upgrade: How to perform an SQL Server Edition Upgrade

We tried that and it was not working as expected. We got a new instance installed with enterprise edition. Actually, we do not need a new instance.

  • Hello Julie,

When you perform an Edition Upgrade then you don't get a new SQL Server instance. Follow step-by-step as described in the article.

  • Hi Julie,

Could you please tell us if you can start the SQL Server Service? Based on my test, if this service cannot start, we cannot do a in-place upgrade from SQL Server RC to SQL Server RTM. Please install a SQL Server RTM instance and then perform a Side-By-Side migration. For more information, please refer to this article: http://sqlmag.com/blog/detailed-migration-steps-sql-server-upgrades-part-i

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

    Best Regards,
    Teige
