List Template Vs List Definition RRS feed

  • Question

  • When do we favor using a template over a definition? And what are the pro's and con's involved?

    Thanks!

  • I haven't seen anything authoritative on this from Microsoft but considering they deprecated site templates for WebTemplate features, I always create my list definitions via the feature framework. It's a bit more complex, but it's not very difficult if you are already comfortable building features and solution packages.

  • Can you clarify what you mean by list template vs definition? Do you mean saving the list as a template using the web UI vs creating a list definition in Visual Studio?
