Visual Studio 2012 with TFS 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I work for a very small company and am currently the only one using TFS.  It seems highly unlikely that we will upgrade to TFS 2012 any time soon as a result, and I do not have the ability to install it on a server myself.  I would like to install Visual Studio 2012 on my computer to look at some of the new features.  However, I am concerned that this install will prevent VS 2010 from being available to me.  If I am unable to open VS 2010 and can only work with VS 2012, is it still possible to use TFS 2010?  I do not utilize most of the features of TFS since I am the only one using it.  I really use it more for checking in and out, keeping notes on what has changed, and labelling.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

  • VS2012 works fine with TFS2010...I'm using this configuration at work for the moment. You can even work on the solution file between VS2010 and VS2012 if you need that.

  • Warning. I am not able to use VS 2012 with TFS 2010.

When I connect to the team server I get following error:

TF204000: The Team Foundation Server to which your team project is connected does not support local workspaces.

I cannot browse the source nor can do anything.

    My configuration is as follows:

    Server: Windows 2008 R2 + SQL 2008 R2 + TFS 2010

    Client: Windows 8 + Visual Studio 2012

  • I got a workspace error too early when used TFSpreview (cloud TFS) in addition to TFS2010 on local machine. But when I removed my workspace and readded it, worked fine wo switch between those two installations (VS2010 / VS2012 against TS2010)

  • Correct. Solved my issue

Now I can use VS 2012 with TFS 2010.

I had to create a Workspace for VS2012 (which is not the one used on VS2010) and things were good.

  • FYI. Yesterday I installed update 1 for Visual Studio 2012 and it got disconnected from TFS2010. I had to do system restore! It works fine as is, but with the "Update 1" it doesn't.
