Sync(two-way) Excel data in SharePoint Online

    Question

  • Hi There,

Is there a way to sync data to and from a SharePoint Online List using an Excel file?

If its not supported OOB then is there a workaround?

    Thanks,

    Bokes

  • Hi Bokes,

We can use “Excel 2007 Add-in: Synchronizing Tables with SharePoint Lists” (SynchorinizeWSSandExcel.xlam) add-in with Excel to synchronize data in Excel tables with SharePoint Lists.

Per my test, it also works in SharePoint Online. We can sync data to and from a SharePoint Online List  with an Excel table.

Here is an article about how to use SynchorinizeWSSandExcel.xlam add-in:

  • Though this is a good solution. It doesn't work for Office 2016 and SharePoint Online.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Bokes,

Per my testing results, it also works for Office 2016 and SharePoint Online.

We can download this add-in and sync data from and to SharePoint Online with it.

  • Hi Linda,

You are correct, but it seems you have to save it in .xls format to have it working(business might not like that). Then too it is inconsistent when I close and open the Excel file again

    Thanks,

    Manoj

    Thanks, Bokes

  • Hi Bokes,

We can synchronize with SharePoint firstly when we re-open the file for keeping the data in Excel file consistent with the data in SharePoint list.

To retain the functionality, we need to save the workbook in the Excel 97-2003 (Biff8) file format. After that, even though we close and re-open the .xls file, the connection still persists.
