  • It would be difficult to impossible to tell you specifically which framework version(s) you can safely delete from your computer, given the information you have provided.

In order to answer your question with specific recommendations, we would need a complete list of *all* installed applications with version of each. Then, each application would have to be researched for system requirements, specifically the publisher's statement of which .NET Framework version (if any) is required. We would also need to know if you have installed any framework versions without having been prompted to do so as a prerequisite to application installation.

I apologize if this all seems to be a big hassle for what may appear to be a simple question, but it is not a simple question. Another factor is the potential hassle associated with mistakenly removing a framework and discovering that needed programs no longer work.

If, by chance, you goal is to recover disc space, I suggest you ask in the Windows XP forums about safe ways to identify and remove unneeded files.

  • That depends entirely on what Windows programs you use and what version(s) of the .NET Framework they require.

You also need to understand that 2.0. 3.0 and 3.5 are *ONE* framework. Version 2.0 is the base framework and 3.0 and 3.5 are extensions to 2.0, not standalone frameworks. Therefore you cannot have 3.0 or 3.5 without 2.0.

IMO, you are best off leaving the .NET Framework installations alone as they either came as part of your Windows OS (Vista includes 2.0/3.0, and Win 7 includes 2.0/3.0/3.5 through SP1), or were installed as prerequisites for programs you use regularly. If you remove frameworks, the programs that need them will no longer run.

  • Hi sdn55,

Could you please tell me why would you want to uninstall some previous versions of .NET Framework? As pvdg42 mentioned, it might occur some potential issue when running other applications.
