Simple drawings in Word - VML or SmartArt or any other option? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to create a word document with simple diagrams programmatically and wondering what are the different methods of inserting shapes in a document.

One option is the VML way, but the format per se is deprecated. But VML format allows me to just insert a rectangle very simply.

The other option is to insert SmartArt. But the downside is that you need to create drawing.xml, data.xml, layout.xml, colors.xml and quickStyle.xml.

    Is there a simpler way?

  • Hi Abhiram

Your problem description sounds like you need to use WordOpenXML (and the Open XML SDK)?

    Which version of Word?

  • Hi Cindy

I am using Microsoft Office 2007. I am using an xml library to generate the docx. So, is there an alternate to these approaches?

  • You didn't really answer my first question. I asked whether you needed to work with the Office Open XML file format.

This forum targets the Word APIs, not the XML file formats. I'm trying to determine where your question should be.
