WSS 3.0 Search not returning expected results RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a site that's pretty old, and has some pretty old content on it. The other day I ran a search for a word I knew was in a couple different lists which has come up before. pipe I didn't get any hits.

I created a new record and searched on one of those words knock and got a result.

I changed the item in the list which had the word pipe and then did a search on pipe and got the hit.

Does data expire and become no longer searchable? I have initiated a full crawl at least twice but the logs report nothing has changed.

I think I should delete my index, but I'm not sure how to accomplish that.

    TIA

  • when you searched for KNOCK, check the timing for the results.

if it shows the current date which you added then your crawler is working fine

you should not worry about the search results.

  • I guess I don't understand. If the word PIPE is in the same list and doesn't come back as a search result when I search for PIPE (until I edit it), that's working fine?

  • Yes, I have. A couple times. There are no errors indicated in the logs.

Here's an example of what I see during the crawl:

  • are you checking the result from one list or its happing with all the list & libraries present in your sharepoint site?

  • It's happening with all the lists & libraries.

This weekend I stopped the search service and allowed it to rebuild. Searches won't return ANY hits at all now. If I modify an existing item, and search on some text from that item, it is returned in the search.

It's like the content is flagged as already indexed and only recent changes are being indexed now.

I read someplace that with WSS 3.0 I can't initiate a full crawl after the content database has been created. Only incremental crawls will occur unless the content database is re-created. Could that be my problem?

  • Giving this a bump. Just to ask again: Is it true that the full crawl only happens when a content database is created and subsequent crawls are incremental?

  • I'm fairly sure you can force a full crawl.

Someone else will hopefully come in to confirm or deny (they like telling me I'm wrong :) )

  • Indeed a quick(very quick!) Google search gave this

    http://blogs.msdn.com/miketag/archive/2008/01/23/force-a-full-crawl-for-a-site.aspx

which confirmed that it is possible.

    Sneaky but nice.

  • Possible in MOSS, yes. Not in WSS 3.0

Edit to add: Going to try anyway though!

Edit 2: Test complete. No love. Still not working.

  • I seem to recall doing this once awhile ago with MS tech support but I don't recall the details. I think you could blow away your index files and then stop/start the search service in order to rebuild both the search database and the indexes at the same time.

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\Data\Applications\veryLongGuidTypeFolderName\Projects\Search\Indexer\CiFiles

Can anybody confirm this approach or let Dvord know if it's the exact wrong thing to do!

  • Interesting. I did stop the search service and delete the associated files, but they weren't located anywhere close to the path you suggested (they were in \windows\SYSMSI\SSEE\MSSQL.2005\MSSQL\Data. When I restarted the service a new database file was created.

Still, no crawl was performed on the existing data, only data which was added since restarting the search service.

  • Stopping and starting the search service has only cleared the indexes so that nothing comes up in search results. Only content from subsequent entries or changes will be returned in search results.

No full crawl has been initiated by any actions I've taken thus far.
