'VS2012 has stopped working' Issue after windows patches are installed

    Question

  • Hi Team

Request your assistance for the below issue in VS2012 Premium edition published to us. We are working in Citrix Xen desktop and VS2012 is published to us from remote windows servers(Windows 2008 R2 64 bit server machines).

We are experiencing issues in VS2012 Whenever any windows patch/update is installed on the remote servers where VS2012 is installed. The error message is "VS2012 has stopped working. Check online for solution/Debug/Close the program" popup.

The network team has mentioned that it is not possible to install VS2012 in local desktop and can only publish VS2012 remotely to us.

Can you please let me know whether there is any solution to the issues as this is interrupting our development time of project very badly?

  • Hi lekha06,

    Thank you for your post.

Usually, installing the Windows Updates doesn't affect the VS running.

On the contrary, we need to check the Windows update and make sure the patches all up before installing VS.

For your issue, please go to Control Panel to repair your VS first, do the steps below:

    1. Disable anti-virus or anti-spyware software.

    2. Clear %TEMP% folder.

    3. Run the VS as administrator to make sure it has enough permissions to do any operations

    4. Run your Visual Studio in safe mode to prevents all third-party VS Packages from loading when Visual Studio starts, thus ensuring stable execution

If the error still persists, please try  running devenv.exe /log <log path> in Command Prompt, the log files will be generated in the <log path>.

Then you can check and analyze the log file to see if there are anything incorrect.

Or upload the file to https://onedrive.live.com/   and share the link with us.

  • Hi

Thank you for the response. I cannot access the remote servers where Visual Studio is installed hence i will ask my citrix team to try these solutions and to send the log.

    Thanks,

    Lekha

    Team

Request you to help me with the solution as early as possible. Also if you require any other details please let me know.

Also we tried to revert the windows patches in one server. In that server, .Net started working fine and did not crash. So we got the doubt whether this crash is associated with applying the windows patches. Request to clarify the same.

    Thanks

  • Hi lekha06,

If you have checked the update and make sure they are ok, I suggest you insert a good VS 2012 Premium to repair your VS.

Before doing so, you could use .NET Framework Setup Verification Tool to check if the .NET Framework is ok.
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/10/13/8999004.aspx

If you find there is anything wrong with .NET Framework, you may use Microsoft .NET Framework Repair Tool to do a repair,
This tool detects and tries to fix some frequently occurring issues with the setup of Microsoft .NET Framework or with updates to the Microsoft .NET Framework.

  • Hi lekha06,

    >>The error message is "VS2012 has stopped working. Check online for solution/Debug/Close the program" popup.

Could you please tell me when did you get this error message?

If the error occurred for a simple project. We may consider whether the cause is in your Visual Studio itself. Have your tried repairing your Visual Studio?

Please try to repair your Visual Studio 2012 first.  If still no help, please use  http://aka.ms/vscollect  to gather the installation logs. After using it, you will find vslogs.cab from %temp% folder. Please upload the file to  https://onedrive.live.com/  and share the link here.

    Best Regards,

    Lake Xiao

I tried to repair VS2012 Premium from Installed Programs in one of the affected server. We got a error message 'Microsoft .Net 4.5 Framework not installed'. So I tried to repair the existing .Net Framework 4.5 component and it got repaired successfully. After that I tried to again repair VS2012 but it resulted in the same error '4.5 not installed'. Hence am confused to proceed further.

I tried to take the logs as you suggested and with the help of my network team tried to upload it to onedrive.live.com but am getting 'File upload failed' with both the zip and unzipped version.

Is there any other alternative to send the vslogs files?

    Thanks,

    Lekha

  • Hi Lekha,

    What's is your OS version?

If it is Win 8, the .NET Framework 4.5 is Preinstalled, see:

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/8z6watww%28v=vs.110%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

In this situation, you don't have to install this .NET Framework separately, please go to Control Panel>Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off to enable the .NET Framework 4.5 related components.

By the way, I recommend you use  sfc /scannow command to see if there are any system errors and to repair missing or corrupted system files before turn on the features.

  • My VisualStudio is installed in servers which has OS as windows 2008 R2 server.

We have a set of 50 servers where VS2012 is installed and based on load our Citrix Xendesktop will be connecting to any one of the servers. So this is not a desktop setup or a dedicated m/c.

As there may be multiple users connecting to those systems remotely for different tasks there are certain security considerations where we may not be able to disable anti-virus, etc.

We have noticed that on rolling back the windows patches, VS2012 seems to work in one such server and they have currently published this server for us to do our daily project tasks. But they cannot hold this for long as windows patching is a regular activity to be done for all servers.

  • Hi Lekha06,

    Sorry for my delay reply.

As the update you installed in the original post, most of them are related to the Security, it may  prevent VS running normally. I still suggest you turn off the firewall, but it seems that it's difficulty for you o disable the AV software.

Besides, would you mind starting VS in  safemode and check if the issue occurs again.

  • Hi

After rebooting the servers multiple times VS2012 started working. But such updates and patches are installed on a regular basis for network security so it fails occasionally with the same error message.

The problem is these crashes are not getting captured in log files and event log too does not give much details. As of now we are working with the temporary solution of rebooting the system.

Rebooting more than just rebooting the servers multiple times which caused VS2012 to begin working again?

I suspect if you remove this "Security Update for .NET Framework (3170048)" or this "Security Update for .NET Framework (3156757)" or both perhaps the issue will be resolved.

As I read this old KB article for an old Hot Fix for .Net Framework 4.0 FIX: "Faulting module name: clr.dll" error message when you run a Microsoft .NET Framework 4-based application which I suspect VS2012 may be a .Net 4.0 based application but am not certain. Not that this patch will work now probably as I would guess your Visual Studio is updated whenever necessary. So I would not try this Hot Fix I'm just refering to it since it describes issues.

Also does your Visual Studios of 2012 all have these or perhaps the lates update(s)?

Overview of Visual Studio 2012 updates

The following table lists the Visual Studio 2012 updates that are released so far.

Note This table includes both released and prerelease Visual Studio 2012 updates.

    3072098 July 17, 2015 Visual Studio 2012 Update 5 RC

  • Hi

My .Net applications are 4.0 based applications. I have not updated the framework to 4.5 yet in my projects. Can this be the issue which is causing .Net to crash on opening any project. But in some servers when opening VS2012 itself the crash happens even before the start page comes. I'm not sure whether we can remove the security framework for .net framework but i'll try to inquire with my network team and get back.

    Regards

    Lekha
