We are currently using a code management software which uses SQL server compact, the size of the database is about 3.4 GB, we need to upgrade our database but i don't know what MS SQL product to purchase for our Windows server 2008 r2 server. Any ideas
as to what to buy and what it cost for server side? Is this licensed per client or how? We currently have 5 user cals on this server. Also, what package we need for the client side if we want to build another database to develop clients which use the
new database which we will build on this server?
The SQL Server license model vary with version and edition. You can refer to the Microsoft site about licensing for SQL Server 2012 and download the PDF SQL Server
2012 Licensing Guide for more details.
As for SQL Server edition, you can choose the edition based on your requirement. For example, you can install SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition as a back-end database server. Standard Editions will be available under the Server and Client Access License
(CAL) model as well as Core-based licenses model. You can select Core-Based Licensing Model if you do not know the exact number of users and devices that will connect to the server.
