"Encrypted" Icon in Inbox RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've written a class (C#/.Net4.0) that creates and sends digitally signed emails over SMTP. So far, it appears to work as planned.

However, when the email is received and viewed in the Outlook Inbox, it displays "Encrypted" icon.  When opened, the email displays the "Digitally Signed" icon as expected.  I can examine the certificate as necessary.

The message is not (and should not be) encrypted.

I suspect the issue lies in the ContentType parameter of AlternateView constructor, but can't seen to solve the issue.

Has anyone else run into this issue?

  • Did you try to use any Extended MAPI viewer to see the difference in the low-level properties?

You may use OutlookSpy (commercial product) or MFCMAPI (open source) for exploring properties. Outlook is built on top of Extended MAPI.
