What license need to get to enable Lab Management in Visual Studio 2012 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Guys,

We have TFS 2010,VS 2012 & my Lab Center is not working in MTM2012.

It indicates that we need to upgrade TFS 2010 in Server to TFS 2012.

    Questions:

1.For upgrade to TFS2012,can I know whether we need to get license for TFS 2012 & if it is,what is the license cost.

2.In TFS,what are the softwares included by default ?{whether SCVMM is there so that to manage lab environment}.

3.We want to create only physical environment in Lab Center. For that, whether SCVMM is required or not.

4.For automation,in Lab Center what are the licenses required?

5.Whether Testcontroller & Test agent need to install & configure in TFS server or in client machine?

    Please advise me.

  • Hi Nazimanasir,

    >>1.For upgrade to TFS2012,can I know whether we need to get license for TFS 2012 & if it is,what is the license cost.

About the TFS2012 license issue, I suggest you can call 1-800-426-9400, Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (Pacific Time) to speak directly to a Microsoft licensing specialist, and you can get more detail information from there. You can also visit the following site for more information and support on licensing issues:

    http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/mplahome.mspx

    >>2.In TFS,what are the softwares included by default ?{whether SCVMM is there so that to manage lab environment}

Since I am not the TFS experts, about this issue, I suggest you can ask this issue directly to the TFS forum: https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/home?forum=tfsgeneral, you will get better support.

    >>3.We want to create only physical environment in Lab Center. For that, whether SCVMM is required or not.

As far as I know that if you want to create both physical machine and virtual machines in Lab Center, you will need to add a standard environment:https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee390842.aspx.

If you want to create virtual machines that are managed by SCVMM, it’s better to add them to an SCVMM environment instead.

    >>4.For automation,in Lab Center what are the licenses required?

Generally, I know that there have no any licenses require when you create a lab environment in lab center from MTM.

    >>5.Whether Testcontroller & Test agent need to install & configure in TFS server or in client machine?

When you want to install and configure the test controller and test agent to run automated test case using lab environment, you can install the test controller on the TFS Server machine or in a client machine.

In addition, when we create a lab environment, the test agent will be installed and configured automatically on the remotely machine( the physical machine or virtual machines ) you add the remotely machine in the Machines tab.

For more information about creating lab environment, please see:https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd380688(v=vs.110).aspx

    Hope it help you!

    Best Regards,
