  • Question

  • ggopinath

In the month of july we had done a poc on bing map with some compatibility tests done with ie8 on plotting of markers and had commited to our client that this was possible solution. But now when our development is almost completed ,an error comes on ie8 and ie9 that matchMedia method is not supported. We wanted to know if it was due to the latest update as per august 10 2017 release or can you please suggest any possible work around to fix the same.

  • IE 8/9 are not supported browsers of Bing Maps. Bing Maps uses HTML5 which is not supported by these browsers. Bing Maps V8 has never worked in these browsers. A list of supported browsers is documented here:

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt712867.aspx

Note that the combined market share of these browsers is just over 2% and has been dropping fast for the past two years. It is on track to hitting 1% in less than 6 months.

  • if it worked in July you weren't using v8, as v8 never worked in ie8 and never will. The main component of v8 is an html5 canvas which doesn't exist in ie8. If you don't believe me try the frozen branch, that hasn't been updated in ober a year. Maybe you were using the old v7 control which did work in ie8, but is retired and being shut down soon.

  • V8 uses HTML5 canvas for rendering and many other HTML5 features that simply do not exist and never existed in IE8. It is impossible to get V8 to work in IE8 and always has been.

The summer update for V8 added a few new features and many bug fixes. But as I said, V8 has never worked on IE8. To access the frozen branch, simply add "&branch=frozen" to the map script URL.
