Restore AutoCorrect to OUTLOOK Right Click Text Menu RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am a dabbler in VBA for Word.  A few years ago I wrote and published some code on my website for restoring the AutoCorrect control on the Word right click text menu.  I get a fair amount of traffic on that topic and often times people are also interested in restoring this feature in OUTLOOK.

    http://gregmaxey.mvps.org/word_tip_pages/customize_shortcut_menu.html

I have very little experience with OUTLOOK so I don't know if it is even possible as a VBA solution.  If it is, I'm sure that there are a lot of people out that would appreciate the efforts of anyone willing to do it and share it.  I would be happy to publish any solution in the webpage above or a link to some other published solution.

    Thanks

  • Hello Greg,

Outlook doesn't let developers to customize the UI from VBA macros. To add a context menu item you need to develop a COM add-in (VSTO or shared one implementing the IDTExtensibility2 interface). You can read more about that in the following articles in MSDN:

Customizing Context Menus in Office 2010

Extending the User Interface in Outlook 2010

  • Eugene,

I suspected something like that.  Unfortunately both links you posted return unable to open due to invalid security certificates.  Besides, I never use that feature anyway and only asked because so many people ask me.  I'm not really interested in delving into serious (COM add-in) development at this point. Thanks for your reply though.

  • Hi Greg,

I agree with Eugene, you could develop a com add-in to achieve this requirement. It is impossible with VBA macros.

If there is no other issues, I would suggest you mark the helpful reply as answer to close this thread.

    Best Regards,

    Edward

  • Edward,

Eugene apparently could and perhaps you could too. I can't because I don't know how to develop solutions using managed code.

I don't mind marking Eugene's reply as the answer to the implicit questions "Can it be done with VBA?" However, I was fairly confident of that before posting and if that was all the information I had hoped garner from the question, I wouldn't have posted in the first place.

The reason for the post was to make the statement or restate the fact that their are apparently a lot of people myself EXCLUDED out there who sorely miss this feature.  I personally rarely used it in Word and to best of my knowledge have never used it in OUTLOOK.

As it is a solution to a problem that I personally don't have I am therefore not interested in learning how to develop managed solutions or hiring Eugene to develop it for me.

The purpose of the post was to state that in addition to the Word solution that I have cobbled together, many people would like a similar solution for OUTLOOK.  If there is anyone out their interested in developing it that I would publish it or a link to their published source along with my own Word solution.

So far, Eugene and possible you could, but apparently aren't interested.  That is ok. I realize that the thread can't stay open while waiting on all the other OUTLOOK solution experts to decide and respond ;-).  I'll close it now.
