backing up and restoring a database that has symmetric keys RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am planning on using symmetric keys to encrypt specific columns in my database (Sql 2008 R2).  When I take a backup of the database, will this backup include these  keys including the DMK, or do these keys need to be backed up separately and restored separately in the case of DR or server move?

Answers

  • Well you only need to backup DMK. Check out my article here that explains step by step process of setting up Column level encryption.
