Wake up pc from sleep state via phone call RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello

I'm looking for an advice for the following problem.
I have a PC with Windows XP installed and a Nokia mobile phone.
I want to connect Nokia and PC via USB cable. I'd like to wake up computer from sleep state whenever Nokia receives a call or SMS.
Can that be done by writing a driver for Nokia phone?

    Thank you.

  • Well theoretically you can do this, but a lot of questions for you:

    1.  Do you have any information on how to program the Nokia phone?  IIRC this was closely held in the past.

    2.  This in a lot of work, for an OS that is going away, and for a phone that is probably unique, consider this carefully.

  • In addition to what don said, the phone itself has to be able to trigger USB wake signaling when a call or SMS arrives. I doubt the device actually makes these triggers, so it doesn't matter what you try to do in a driver, if the gw can't do it, the scenario won't work

  • Thank you for quick replies.

So far I have found out that applets or programs for Nokia is being written in Java language. Nokia offers rich support for Nokia developers, but unfortunately i was not able to find any example of applet "Wake on call" or something like that on their website. Also, as I have no experience in Java i thought that i may try to solve this problem from Windows side, by trying to modify some ready-made mouse or keyboard driver.(computers wake up on mouse movement and that's exactly what i need). However, from your replies i understand that this task cannot be done without programing the phone. Am I right?

    p.s.

The phone definitely emits signals over USB whenever there is an activity. It can be seen in HyperTerminal window.

  • activity on the wire != wake signaling. the key here is that it needs to pull specific wires to signal wake while the device is in low power (from a usb perspective)
