Error message display best approach RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

Could you please provide few inputs and references on the following:

Popup or alert type of message from office web app html page. – would like to display error message.

    We explored below –
    1.      Setting error in row  - is possible
    2.      Displaying error in task pane  - item.innerHtml = “”  - possible
    3.      Alert or popup from html / .js file – not able to get it done.

Is option 3 possible? Other than modal dialog of html5?

  • Hi, Ravi

Good question - error messages are important features to include for most apps.

Option 3 (using the modal window.alert() function) has been disabled for apps so that they cannot interfere with the user's experience in Office.

Option 2 is the best solution: you can display error messages in various ways in the task pane or content pane of an app. Setting item.innerHtml is just one of many such solutions. You could also make use of one of many publicly-available JavaScript libraries such as JQuery to get professional, fancy-looking, or animated error messages.

I'm not sure what you mean by Option 1. Could you clarify? If you're suggesting displaying an error in a bound or selected cell, then yes, that is possible, but probably not the best solution.

Let me know if you have other questions!
