Azure AD Domain services in test environment

    Question

  • Hi all

I am setting up a test/dev environment in azure and want to enable domain services.  As this is just a test environment, I don't want to have domain services enabled 24/7 as the cost is too prohibitive for a test env.  Is there anything I can do to keep the cost down? It seems like you can't turn it on and off too easily without having to reprovision domain services again, and assumingly take machines off and on the domain over again. Am I correct in this assumption? Is there a way to keep costs down?

    Thanks

  • Azure AD Domain Services is not something you can turn on and off to reduce cost, once you turn it off it will delete your AD DS information and you would start fresh next time you turned it on. Pricing is based on the number of objects in the domain, so if you have less than 25,000 objects then your price is around $3 per day.
